Head-Smashed-In presents high flying history with Flying Buffalo Project

On Wednesday, August 7, Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump will host a flight of some uniquely artistic kites. The Flying Buffalo Project features kites made of canvases painted by some of the most beloved and talented First Nations artists in Canada and the United States.
Organized by SkyWindWorld, the Flying Buffalo Project is visiting numerous North American buffalo jump sites in its quest to highlight the historical importance of the buffalo, buffalo jumps and First Nations art. Twelve artists have participated in this first year and organizers plan to see another dozen artists’ work take to the skies in 2014.
On the same day, visitors can experience the powerful connection of drumming and dancing to the ancient buffalo hunting culture. Drumming and Dancing on the Plaza takes place every Wednesday until August 28 and features some of Western Canada’s best First Nations dancers performing to the beat of Blackfoot drumming and singing. Performances run at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. In case of inclement weather, drumming and dancing will take place inside the centre; the kites of the Flying Buffalo Project will also be displayed indoors.
Admission is $10 for adults, $22 for a family (two adults and their children ages 7 to 17), $5 for youth (ages 7 to 17) and $8 for seniors. Children six and under are admitted free.
Operated by Alberta Culture, Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump is located 18 kilometres northwest of Fort Macleod on Secondary Highway 785. One of the world’s oldest, largest and best-preserved buffalo jump sites, it was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1981.
