Healing Our Spirit Worldwide – 2018 Sydney – Interview with James ‘Uncle’ Michael Widdy Welsh: Member of the Stolen Generation
James ‘Uncle’ Michael Widdy Welsh, a member of the Australian Aboriginal Stolen Generation, speaks in a NationTalk interview from the Healing Our Spirit Worldwide (HOSW) 2018 event.
In this interview, the term ‘Stolen Generation’ is explained as a term used in Australia in their shared or similar history to the Indigenous peoples of Canada’s experience, whereas Australia’s Indigenous children were forcibly removed from their families and not allowed to practice their cultural/traditional ways and have similar lasting effects such as the intergenerational trauma experienced in Canada.
Widdy, which is explained as his Aboriginal name, or ‘Uncle’ Michael Welsh shares elements of his past and history as he recalls it. His personal, heartfelt story brings up the heartbreaking similarities and stark contrasts of issues being faced by the Indigenous peoples of Australia and Canada in relation to a common past.
To summate Widdy’s outlook on healing and the telling of his story, by paraphrasing his own words, the most important part of him telling his story is the people listening.
