Health Council of Canada Explores Solutions to Diabetes, Chronic Disease Toll
TORONTO, March 2 – The Health Council of Canada commends the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences (ICES) for its important work in helping define the current and projected toll diabetes has and will take on Canadians and their health care system.
The ICES study by lead researcher Lorraine Lipscombe, published this week in The Lancet, helps define the scope of the challenges Canada faces from an aging, changing population more vulnerable to chronic diseases such as diabetes.
So how should Canada respond to that challenge? How can we improve our ability to prevent and manage chronic disease? On Monday, the Health Council of Canada will explore those questions in its inaugural report on health outcomes, Why Health Care Renewal Matters: Lessons from Diabetes. The report examines the way chronic health conditions – specifically diabetes – are diagnosed, managed and treated in this country and explores changes in health care and lifestyle that can have profound, practical and positive effects on the health and quality of life of Canadians with chronic health conditions.
The report is being released at the London InterCommunity Health Centre to highlight that facility’s unique approach to diabetes care and management in the Latin American community.
