New Director of Cultural Integration Vanessa Lillie speaks on her journey and her hopes for the future

June 30, 2022 —  The UM has made a commitment to create safe and supportive spaces that promote the sharing of Indigenous knowledges, cultures, and traditions throughout the institution. To guide the institution in honouring that commitment by working with Elders and the community, Vanessa Lillie [BAHons/16] has transitioned into the new Director of Cultural Integration position. Vanessa’s role will include helping faculties with their reconciliation action plans, creating learning workshops for the UM community and promoting the celebration of Indigenous cultures.

Vanessa is Cree and Métis. Her family is from St. Peter’s/Peguis Reserve along the banks of the Red River, with roots in Peguis First Nation. She earned her honours degree in psychology from UM. She has over fifteen years of experience working in education and began her time at UM in the Faculty of Arts as the first academic advisor for Indigenous students and has spent the past two years as a student advisor in the Indigenous Student Centre overseeing the cultural portfolio.
