Hydro-Québec partners with CIB on financing for Indigenous wind projects – The Logic

The Montreal-based Crown corporation is working with Canadian Infrastructure Bank (CIB) in the negotiation process for wind projects with First Nations to “standardize it and simplify it.” Both aim to work together to alleviate what can be a “complicated, time consuming task,” Hydro-Québec chief executive Michael Sabia said at the First Nations Major Projects Coalition conference Tuesday. (The Logic)

Talking point: Hydro-Québec is shifting its approach to include First Nations as participants in the design of projects, as opposed to creating projects before bringing them to the relevant Indigenous groups prior to construction. Now, Hydro-Québec is identifying sites alongside First Nations, and is currently working with the Cree to update turbines in some of their territories. Sabia said there is always “tension between speed and building the fullness of the kind of trust we’d like.” The company previously said it would commit an additional $500 million to purchase Indigenous utilities companies over the next four years, for a total of $1.5 billion.
