INDIGENOUS BAR ASSOCIATION CONGRATULATES PRIME MINISTER TRUDEAU ON HIS ELECTION VICTORY
Ottawa, Ontario, October 20, 2015 – The Indigenous Bar Association (“IBA”) congratulates Prime Minister Trudeau on his electoral victory and applauds his election promise to honour the rights of Indigenous peoples.
The IBA looks forward to engaging Prime Minister Trudeau on his commitment to fully adopting and implementing the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People including his pledge to repeal and amend all existing laws in Canada that do not respect Indigenous rights or that were passed without proper consultation.
In support of Prime Minister Trudeau’s commitment to implementing the 94 calls to action, as set out in the Truth and Reconciliation’s recent Report, the IBA would like to offer its assistance and immediately schedule a meeting with the Prime Minister to set out an implementation strategy. The IBA also offers Prime Minister Trudeau assistance in immediately establishing a national inquiry into the murdered and missing Indigenous women and girls.
The underlying findings of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission call for a renewed relationship between Indigenous peoples and the Crown as was also found within the 1996 Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples among others. Fundamentally, the relationship between Canada and Indigenous Peoples must be based on mutual respect, and that includes respect for our differences. The Indigenous Bar Association calls on the incoming leadership to adopt the calls to action and renew its relationship with Indigenous peoples.
This is a time for optimism and we are hopeful that the Prime Minister will seek to engage the Indigenous leadership to begin the difficult process of reconciliation. The Indigenous Bar Association looks forward to developing a relationship with the Prime Minister in order to assist with this most important process.
