Indigenous people face challenges finding homes in Peterborough – Peterborough Examiner
Jan. 10, 2022
Indigenous people in the Peterborough area make up close to 30 per cent of those who are homeless or in core housing need and face issues of availability, cost, stereotyping and racism, advocates say.
In Canada, Indigenous people comprise less than four per cent of the population but make up more than 10 per cent of the national homelessness population. They’re less likely to find a place to call home and may end up homeless or living in the shelter system.
Caseloads are particularly high for local workers who are trying to find housing for Indigenous people, said Amber Rose, housing case co-ordinator with Nogojiwanong Friendship Centre.
