Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond, a former judge and British Columbia’s former children’s advocate, holds a news conference in Victoria to provide an update on her investigation into allegations of racism against Indigenous people in the province’s health-care system. Turpel-Lafond was originally appointed by the B.C. government to investigate allegations that emergency room staff in at least one hospital played a game to guess the blood-alcohol levels of patients, in particular of Indigenous people. Her independent investigation has been expanded to examine the extent of systemic Indigenous-specific racism in B.C.’s health-care system.
