With just seven sitting days left before the House of Commons shuts down for the holidays, Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland is set for a high-stakes appearance before the House FINANCE committee, where she’s booked in for a two-hour cross-aisle cross-examination over her omnibus bid to extend and revamp key pandemic support measures. (11 AM – 1 PM)
Despite a coordinated push by her government to fast-track the bill through committee by the end of this week, opposition members have made it clear that, while they’re still prepared to make sure it gets to the legislative finish line before the sitting wraps up next Friday, they’re not going to let the government’s accelerated timeline prevent them from exercising their parliamentary responsibility to ensure due diligence.
Not only does that mean Freeland may find herself facing a less-than-friendly audience this morning, but it could also trigger a last-minute standoff over the bill itself if it undergoes a significant rewrite during clause-by-clause review.
