Today may mark the official deadline for Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s order to shut down Enbridge’s Line 5 pipeline, but, according to the latest dispatch from the Star, neither the embattled energy company nor the Canadian government is expecting the taps to be forcibly turned off while the court-ordered mediation continues south of the border.
Even so, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau should be ready to face a flurry of questions about the fate of the pipeline when he faces his cross-aisle adversaries in the House of Commons this afternoon — particularly, though not necessarily exclusively, from the Conservatives, who now want the government to “invoke the 1977 Transit Pipelines Treaty.” As they wrote in a news release, the treaty was supported by then-senator Joe Biden “to ensure this vital infrastructure link remains open,” and to deliver that message to now President Biden personally.
As CBC News pointed out last night, however, there’s no sign the new occupant of the White House will “come to Canada’s rescue” in the ongoing dispute.
