GLACE BAY — Fishermen in Glace Bay and area say they have only two really good areas in which to fish and DFO is hooking one away from them.
“At least 40 per cent — maybe more — of the halibut quota that was caught in 4Vn came from the area they are talking about closing,” said Herb Nash, president of the 4Vn management board association.
“To lose that much halibut in one area and to tell us to go fish in another area, we’re going to have to run twice as much gear to catch half as much fish.”
Nash said the St. Anns Bank area in 4Vn — which goes off Cape North to Gabarus — is being designated a marine protected area and will be closed to fishing this year, a huge blow to fishermen from Glace Bay, Port Morien, Main-a-Dieu and area.
