Jaime Battiste, MP for Sydney-Victoria, has announced his candidacy for the leadership of the Liberal Party, aiming to become Canada’s first Indigenous prime minister.

A member of the Eskasoni First Nation, Battiste made history in 2019 as the first Mi’kmaw elected to Parliament. Now, he seeks to continue breaking barriers by leading the country.

Battiste’s campaign will focus on key issues such as restarting First Nations child welfare talks, halting carbon tax increases, and working with premiers on climate change policies.

He also supports national programs like affordable housing, child care, and healthcare enhancements. His platform emphasizes the need for stronger Indigenous representation and broader regional voices in national leadership.
