The Qikiqtani Inuit Association (QIA) today confirmed Kakivak Association’s commitment to provide up to $2,642,640 for the construction of new a childcare centre in Iqaluit. The funds for this initiative come from the Inuit Early Learning and Childcare (IELCC) program, part of Kakivak’s Indigenous Skills and Employment Training Program agreement with Employment and Social Development Canada.

“We are happy that we have this opportunity and the resources to support the creation of new childcare space”, said Jeremy Tunraluk, Chair of the Kakivak Association Board of Directors. “Kakivak has been supporting early childhood education for Inuit children for many years, and we are now in a position to enhance that support with this significant investment.”

The Qaujigiartiit Health Research Centre will build, operate, and own the mixed-used facility in Iqaluit called the Inuusirvik Community Wellness Hub. This Wellness Hub will include a new childcare facility to host up to 28 children.

“The Qaujigiartiit Health Research Centre is very pleased to receive the support of Kakivak Association for this important community project,” said Dr. Gwen Healey Akearok, Executive and Scientific Director for the Qaujigiartiit Health Research Centre. “Creating innovative spaces for our community takes collaboration across all sectors and we are grateful for the support. We look forward to the day that the new childcare centre is open!”

“QIA understands that access to childcare facilities in our region is a necessity when supporting our communities.  By supporting facilities like this, we are encouraging Qikiqtani Inuit and their families to achieve their goals whether it be work or education related.” Said Olayuk Akesuk, President of QIA.
