Second annual event hosted by I.E. Weldon helps make Indigenous learning “real.”
Students from more than a dozen Kawartha Lakes schools didn’t need to be asked twice to join in Tuesday’s powwow and drum social.
The sight of hundreds of students stepping, dancing and recalling came close to bringing Kelly Moore to very happy tears.
“It’s different to experience something first-hand rather than reading about it in a book or being told about it by someone,” said Moore, Trillium Lakelands District School Board indigenous education consultant.
“It just makes it real.”
The event, held at I.E. Weldon Secondary School was the second to be organized by the school board to help kick off National Indigenous Peoples Month. The first was hosted by Bracebridge Muskoka Lakes Secondary School in 2023 and Haliburton will host next year’s celebration.
