Law Society to observe first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

September 30, 2021 marks the first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This federal statutory holiday received Royal Assent in June and is intended to honour the lost children and residential school survivors, their families and communities. This is an important commemoration of the painful history and the impacts of residential schools which continue today.

On this first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, the Law Society will be observing September 30 as a day of commemoration to reflect on the tragic history and ongoing legacy of residential schools. Like the Ontario Courts and others across the justice sector, this means that most Law Society operations and offices will be closed.

The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is a vital component of the reconciliation process. All of us have a role to play in the process of reconciliation. It is only by working together that we will be able to make lasting change.

The National Day for Truth and Reconciliations falls on Orange Shirt Day, a day to wear orange as a symbolic gesture and honour residential school survivors.
