Level 3 EV Fast Chargers ready for use in Behchokǫ and Fort Smith
February 4, 2025
NT Energy and the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) are pleased to announce that Level 2 and 3 Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Stations have opened in Behchokǫ̀ and Fort Smith. Both stations include two 100 kW Level 3 chargers and two 19.2 kW chargers. They have been installed as part of the GNWT’s 2030 Energy Strategy and 2022-2025 Energy Action Plan; they will reduce transportation emissions and continue bringing the NWT closer to establishing a zero-emission vehicle corridor.
The GNWT is strategically investing in EV charging infrastructure in hydroelectric-powered communities to encourage electric vehicle adoption, promote energy affordability in the North, and address climate change. This infrastructure supports the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, attracts new utility customers, and helps stabilize electricity rates across the NWT.
In 2024, NT Energy and the GNWT worked to install two Level 3 and two Level 2 EV charging stations in Hay River. In 2023, Naka Power, with the support of the GNWT, installed two EV chargers in Yellowknife and has plans to add chargers in Fort Providence and Enterprise next year. These installations align with the vision of an EV charging corridor that will eventually span from Yellowknife to the NWT-Alberta border.

Quotes
“It’s exciting to the see the EV corridor beginning to take shape. Residents and visitors to the NWT with electric vehicles will soon be able to travel from the Alberta border to Yellowknife knowing that charging infrastructure is in place along the way.”
- Cory Strang, NTPC President and CEO
“With the installation of EV Fast Chargers in Behchokǫ̀ and Fort Smith, the NWT continues its work to establish a zero-emission vehicle corridor and contribute to a more sustainable energy future for the North. These initiatives support one of the key mandate priorities of the 20th Assembly—to leverage federal funding to close the infrastructure gap through investments in green power generation, transmission, and transportation networks.”
- Caroline Wawzonek, Minister of Infrastructure
Quick facts
- The investment in the NWT EV corridor comes from a combination of sources:
- New funding under the GNWT’s 2022-25 Energy Action Plan ($2.06 million).
- The GNWT’s GHG Grant Program, which is supported by the Government of Canada’s Low Carbon Economy Leadership Fund ($1.5 million).
- The GNWT’s Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Program, which is supported by the Government of Canada’s Zero Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program ($350,000).
- NT Energy is a wholly owned subsidiary of NT Hydro, which in turn is owned by the GNWT. It is a sister company of the Northwest Territories Power Corporation (NTPC) and engages in projects and initiatives which are separate from NTPC activities regulated by the NWT Public Utilities Board.
