MONTREAL _ The Liberal finance critic says the new government must use an upcoming economic update to tell Quebecers how it intends to pay for its campaign promises.

Carlos Leitao said today at a news conference that despite what he called a considerable surplus left over by the Liberal government, Quebec’s finances aren’t a bottomless well.

The legislature resumes sitting tomorrow for the first time since Francois Legault’s Coalition Avenir Quebec swept to power Oct. 1.

Leitao says he expects a Dec. 3 economic update by Finance Minister Eric Girard to include promised funding for infrastructure projects.

He is also calling on Girard to fulfil a commitment to transfer 1 percentage point of Quebec’s 10 per cent sales tax to municipalities. And he is looking for a plan to address labour shortages affecting businesses across Quebec.

Legault has suggested the surplus expected by the end of this fiscal year is not as large as initially forecast.
