Long Point First Nation achieves Financial Management System Certification
September 16, 2025
LONG POINT FIRST NATION – Long Point First Nation (LPFN), located in the eastern part of the Abitbi-Témiscamingue region in Quebec, has achieved Financial Management System (FMS) Certification from the First Nations Financial Management Board (FMB). This means that LPFN’s finance and administrative governance practices now meet the standards of the FMB’s highest level of financial certification, based on internationally recognized standards of financial management.
“Obtaining Financial Management System Certification will now open a lot of doors,” says Chief Steeve Mathias. “It’s going to reassure our current, potential, and future partners. It’s incredible what we’ve achieved and gives our Nation the credibility we deserve.”
In recent years, LPFN has advanced major initiatives to strengthen community well-being, including improved social and health services, investments in education, housing development, and cultural revitalization projects. With FMS Certification, that Nation reaffirms its commitment to building a prosperous future grounded in integrity, resilience, and Anicinabe values.
LPFN pursued FMS Certification to strengthen community trust, improve access to capital for future development, and demonstrate its commitment to transparent, disciplined governance. The certification provides a foundation for long-term sustainability and resilience, ensuring that fiscal stewardship remains at the heart of the Nation’s progress.
The path to certification began with the adoption of LPFN’s Financial Administration Law and Financial Performance Certification in March of 2019. Since then, the Nation has developed over 60 policies and procedures, including governance, human resources, finance, emergency preparedness, and risk management frameworks. These tools ensure that community priorities are supported by sound financial systems and clear accountability.
The FMB congratulates Long Point First Nation on the significant achievement of FMS Certification.
