The Manitoba government has invested $2.1 million in 35 projects since September 2021 to improve infrastructure in several Northern Affairs communities, Indigenous Reconciliation and Northern Relations Minister Eileen Clarke announced today.

“Our government is committed to building stronger communities in the north by continuing to invest in capital projects that create jobs and make life better for everyone,” said Clarke. “This investment supports a number of critical projects, including roads and water treatment plant upgrades, that will ensure Indigenous and non-Indigenous residents have access to infrastructure that supports a better quality of life and more resilient communities.”

The minister noted investments totalling $250,000 for road repair projects related to 2022 spring flooding in 12 Northern Affairs communities.

In 2021, the Manitoba government also provided $5.1 million to capital projects in Northern Affairs communities including waste disposal site upgrades, water treatment plant dehumidifiers, and water intake modification projects.

The Department of Indigenous Reconciliation and Northern Relations is responsible for capital programming, providing essential municipal infrastructure and equipment in Northern Affairs communities. The department offers consulting services and support for capital project planning, administration, and delivery at the community level.
