Local First Nations communities gathered at the Maskwacis Veterans Memorial on Nov. 8 to celebrate Indigenous Veterans Day, and recognize their veterans.

The Chiefs, and members, of the Ermineskin, Samson, Louis Bull, and Montana Cree Nations attended the event, to remember more than 70 veterans from these four nations. The ceremony started with a flag song by a local Ermineskin drum group and a procession, followed by the opening prayer from Muriel Lee.

“It may seem like long ago that we had the last war, and our people form the communities went to war for us. That says a lot about who they were, where their minds were, and where their hearts were and their commitment and courage. So I think about that and know that us today we have to work together, there’s no other way,” said Lee.

“Those people went to fight for us and some of them didn’t come back. We can enjoy this beautiful day, we are here to make our communities better, to make our people stronger, because of them.”
