SUBJECT:

Chiefs from the Innu, Maliseet and Mi’gmaq Nations – gathered in Montreal for the Assembly of First Nations meeting – will demand that federal party leaders tell voters whether they will protect the Gulf of St. Lawrence from oil and gas development.

Recently, Québec announced plans to lift a moratorium and issue exploration permits in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The Deepwater Horizon catastrophe in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010 was caused by an exploration well.

The leadership of the Innu and Maliseet of Québec and the Mi’gmaq of Gespe’gwa’gi formed a coalition in October 2013 to speak with one voice for the protection of Aboriginal and Treaty rights and title throughout the Gulf of St. Lawrence from the danger posed by oil and gas.
