Métis Nation British Columbia Approves 2022-23 Budget
April 15, 2022 (Surrey BC) – Métis Nation British Columbia’s (MNBC) Board of Directors has approved the 2022-23 Budget, with a focus on delivering programs and services to MNBC Citizens across BC. The proposed budget builds upon an historic year at MNBC that saw the acquisition of land to build affordable housing, childcare facilities, and space for Chartered Communities, and record funding provided to Métis Chartered Communities and Métis learners.
MNBC staff and Board members engaged with Chartered Communities through a Budget survey, for the first time, prior to the drafting of Budget 2022. Community feedback and priorities were incorporated in this first draft. MNBC’s Board of Directors and staff are committed to an expanded Budget consultation process for the 2023-24 Budget that will see greater engagement with Communities and feedback from Citizens.
“Our entire Board is committed to expanding our engagement with MNBC Citizens and Chartered Communities on the development of our Budget,” says Lissa Dawn Smith, MNBC President. “While the majority of our funding is tied to specific agreements, we continue to advocate for expanded core funding so that our Nation has more flexibility to meet the needs of our Citizens.”
Highlights from the 2022-23 Budget include:
- the newly announced Métis Child Care Benefit;
- funding supports for Métis learners through the Ministry of Skills Training, Employment, and Post-Secondary;
- creation of the Métis Housing Authority to manage land acquisitions and construction of affordable housing, child care, and office space for Communities; and
- continued early-years and family programming through Métis Family Connections, the Wellbeing Program, and Métis Early Years Culture and Language programs.
“Engaging our Chartered Communities and Citizens is vital in the budgetary process,” says Patrick Harriott, MNBC Treasurer. “This was the first year we did a survey with Communities, and we are going to develop a more expansive process for next year’s Budget to include Citizen and Community feedback right from the outset of our Budget development.”
