Metis Nation–Saskatchewan pays tribute to Veterans and their families

November 8, 2023 – Batoche, SK – Despite playing significant roles in wars and conflicts engaged by Canada, Métis veterans remain the ‘forgotten warriors’. Today, at a special private ceremony at Batoche, Métis Nation–Saskatchewan (MN–S) hosted veterans and their families, and paid homage to their dedication and unwavering commitment to our Métis Nation. The intimate gathering featured veterans, their families, and special guests.

MN–S Vice President Michelle LeClair said, “We stand in this special place today to remember our ancestors who stood up for our Métis rights and we pay tribute to the men and women who followed suit. While Canada has started to acknowledge our Métis men and women who answered the call to service, many remain in that ‘forgotten’ role. It is a priority of our government to have proper and meaningful recognition for every Métis Veteran.”

While the full extent of Métis veterans’ contributions to two World Wars and the Korean War cannot be measured, the late Cathy Littlejohn’s Métis Soldiers of Saskatchewan: 1914-1953 states more than 1,700 Saskatchewan Métis selflessly enlisted.

Veterans Minister Mervin ‘Tex’ Bouvier said, “Batoche is a sacred place for all Métis people. It is an honour to stand in the shadow of the brave men and women who have gone before us in defense of our country and our Métis Nation. We acknowledge and pay respect to our First Nations allies who stood with us against the forces of colonization.”

Minister Bouvier echoed the Vice President’s comments adding that Canada has a long way to go in respectfully and rightfully compensating the contributions of all our Métis and First Nations veterans.
