Lucy Kuptana, Minister Responsible for Status of Women, issued the following statement on National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women:

“Today as we observe the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, we are called to pause, reflect, mourn, and recommit ourselves to the ongoing fight against gender-based violence that affects women, girls, and 2SLGBTQI+ individuals in NWT communities. This day marks the 35th anniversary of a tragic event—the 1989 École Polytechnique de Montréal massacre, where 14 young women lost their lives solely because of their gender. As we remember them, we must acknowledge the deep scars left by such violence and reaffirm our unwavering commitment to combat the hatred and misogyny that continues to persist.

This day also serves as a poignant reminder of the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG) national tragedy. We stand in solidarity with the families and communities impacted by this violence, recognizing their pain and supporting their healing journeys. The stark reality here in the Northwest Territories is troubling: we have the second-highest rate of police-reported intimate partner and family violence in Canada. This is a crisis we cannot ignore.

While December is often associated with joy and family, we must also reflect on those who experience loss and sorrow during this season due to violence. We honour their memories by pledging to make significant changes to prevent further loss. This year’s theme for the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence is “Come Together, Act Now.” By standing and working together, we send a powerful message: violence against women is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.

Today is not just a day of remembrance, but a call to action and a catalyst for change. The government is committed to this fight. Recently, we signed a funding agreement with the federal government, allocating $16 million over four years for implementing the National Action Plan to End Gender-Based Violence. This unprecedented approach involves collaboration among multiple government departments to deliver essential services and support, including critical funding for the Women’s Shelter network and various community initiatives. Together, we are championing grassroots efforts to raise awareness and combat gender-based violence. The Gender-Based Violence Community Initiative Fund has empowered 15 organizations to engage their communities on this vital issue, fostering understanding and dialogue.

As we move forward, let us remain steadfast in our resolve to ensure a future where all women, girls, and 2SLGBTQI+ individuals can live free from violence and fear. Thank you for your ongoing commitment.

Together, we can make a difference.  Quyanainni”
