Treaty One Territory, Winnipeg, MB – Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak (MKO) Inc. is issuing this statement to share condolences with the family and friends of Rebecca Contois of Winnipeg.

Grand Chief Garrison Settee states:

“On behalf of Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak, today I express our sincere condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of the late Rebecca Contois. Ms. Contois was only 24 years old and was the victim of a homicide in Winnipeg.

Women are sacred and should be treated as such. I’m extremely concerned to hear of the violent passing of Rebecca Contois and my prayers are with her loved ones and her entire community at this time.

There is much work to do when it comes to supporting women. MKO’s Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG) Liaison Unit supports families and communities who are impacted by the issue of MMIWG in addition to supporting survivors of violence. Anyone who needs to access support from our Unit can call us toll free at 1-800-442-0488 or at 204-677-1648.

MKO’s MMIWG Liaison Unit along with members of our Mobile Crisis Response Unit will attend a vigil for the late Rebecca Contois this evening in Winnipeg. Thank you to our staff members who continue to support people impacted by gender-based violence.

As the Grand Chief of MKO, I am committed to supporting First Nation women, girls, Two Spirit, and gender-diverse people. I condemn gender-based violence and am committed to advocating for the adoption of the 231 Calls for Justice to ensure we can build a safer province.”

Anyone who needs access to emergency counselling or support can call either of the following crisis lines 24 hours a day, 7 days a week:
