MNBC: Ministry of Women & Gender Equity | Thanks for Listening Report

Métis Nation British Columbia (MNBC) is honoured to announce the release of the Thanks for Listening: Witnessing Métis Women & Girls Experiences of Violence & Pathways to Healing Report on October 4.

The report emerged from the “Sashing Our Warriors” campaign, a grassroots movement that calls attention to the impact of violence on our otherwise invisible Métis women and girls.

According to reports that emerged from the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous women and girls, many studies were First Nations-specific. They did not reflect the experiences of Inuit and Métis women and girls. Métis women and girls experience more violence than non-Indigenous women and girls in Canada, and pervasive racist and sexist stereotypes, as well as poorer socio-economic conditions that place them at greater risk for violence. Without a more detailed assessment of the unique challenges Métis women and girls face, these reports’ recommendations will not be as effective for them.

As such, MNBC, in collaboration with researchers Natalie Clark, Patricia Baraskas, and Robline Davey sought to collect the experiences of Métis women and girls who have experienced violence through an online survey and two focus groups to ensure that these supports and efforts are inclusive of the Métis voice. Close to 400 Métis women and girls completed the survey.

“The purpose of this report was to give survey respondents a voice,” says Dr. Natalie Clark, Associate Professor and Chair of the School of Social Work and Human Service at Thompson Rivers University. “Furthermore, the title of the report reflects the honouring and responsibility, as well as commitment to breaking the silence about violence against Métis women and girls.”
