MNBC: Opening of Island Métis Family and Community Services Society’s (IMFCSS) new Child Care Program
Métis Nation British Columbia (MNBC) is excited to announce the opening of Island Métis Family and Community Services Society’s (IMFCSS) new Child Care Program. IMFCSS recognizes and aims to fulfill the extensive need for culturally safe and relevant child care spaces for Métis and urban Indigenous peoples. In response to the demand for child care services within the Métis community in the Greater Victoria area, MNBC has supported Island Métis Family and Community Services Society (IMFCSS) with the creation of the licensed “Island Métis Child Care Centre.”
“Providing access to quality, culturally-relevant child care is vitally important to the growth of our Nation, and a key strategic goal of our Cabinet,” says Debra Fisher, MNBC Minister of Education. “This project is a wonderful step in the right direction for Métis families in the Greater Victoria region.”
Melanie Hudson, IMFCSS Executive Director, adds, “I am so grateful that our children will have a child care centre where they can be immersed in the culture and language so they can develop a strong sense of belonging and identity within the Métis community.”
With support from the Province, IMFCSS and MNBC received Rapid Renovation funds to renovate an existing building for the new Island Métis Child Care Centre, leading to the approved application to be an Aboriginal Head Start Program.
IMFCSS opened their doors on Wednesday, March 23rd ,2022, to Métis children and families, for access to a quality, culturally safe Early Years Program—ensuring our Métis children will grow up to be the strong, proud, and resilient leaders of our future.
