EDMONTON – Food bank usage has soared across Alberta, including among university students during the summer months.
“During the summer semester we’ve seen a dramatic increase in a time that we don’t normally see increases,” said Caitlin Phare, the executive director of the Campus Food Bank at the University of Alberta.
Food bank usage among the general population has also increased across Alberta, according to the provincial organization that oversees food banks. It’s normal for donations to slump during the summer months, but food bank co-ordinators say higher-than-normal numbers of people relying on emergency food sources has become a cause for concern.
