YELLOWKNIFE (March 12, 2009) – The release of the Multi-Sport Games Review was announced today by the Honourable Robert C. McLeod, Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs (MACA). The report was commissioned by MACA, in consultation with the Northwest Territories (NWT) Sport and Recreation Council, to guide the development of a long-term plan for the NWT’s involvement in multi-sport games.“MACA is committed to the NWT’s continued participation in multi-sport games, including the 2009 Canada Summer Games and the 2010 Arctic Winter Games,” said Minister McLeod. “The report provides a strong basis to engage in a meaningful dialogue with our partners. It also outlines the cultural, health, economic and social benefits that participants receive from being involved in these events.”

The purpose of the review was to provide a base of knowledge to guide discussions with the Council and its partners about how we support our participation in multi-sport games, how we select and manage our teams, and to better understand the barriers and challenges we face in terms of delivering this program fairly and equitably for all residents. The report provides recommendations on a more effective and efficient approach which will help stakeholders to better plan for future delivery of this program area.
