National Child Day 2023

20 November 2023

On November 20, the Department of Education invites Nunavummiut to celebrate National Child Day.

National Child Day recognizes Canada’s commitment to respect and support the rights of children and youth with two historic events: the 1959 signing of the United Nations Declaration of the Rights of the Child and the adoption of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1989.

By ratifying the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1991, Canada made a commitment to ensure that all children and youth are treated with dignity and respect. Some of these commitments include the opportunity for children to be heard when decisions are being made about them, to be protected from harm, to be provided with their basic needs, and provide them every opportunity to reach their full potential.

On National Child Day, we recognize and celebrate children and youth as active, valued, and able citizens in our communities.
