HAPPY VALLEY-GOOSE BAY, LABRADOR, June 22, 2017 – NunatuKavut Community Council (NCC) President Todd Russell today issued the following statement:

“NCC welcomed yesterday’s statement from Premier Ball confirming that the Province will follow through on the Muskrat Falls methylmercury mitigation agreement reached during the October 26, 2016 meeting with Labrador’s three Indigenous groups. Consistent with that agreement, the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador stated that Nalcor has begun the process of lowering water levels in the Muskrat Falls reservoir.

Following through on commitments is very important in building a relationship based on trust and mutual respect. It also boosts our confidence in the work that the Independent Expert Advisory Committee will undertake. I have always felt the agreement reached last fall is a credible approach in dealing with the issue of methylmercury and the protection of our environment, health and way of life. NCC looks forward to participating in this important process, which will involve both independent, evidence-based science and Indigenous knowledge as we move forward.”
