HAPPY VALLEY-GOOSE BAY, LABRADOR, April 13, 2016 – The NunatuKavut Community Council (NCC) today announced that it received the 2016 Provincial Outstanding Partnership Award from the Newfoundland and Labrador Region of the Canadian Diabetes Association.

“It is an honour to receive this award,” said NCC President Todd Russell. “We truly believe in the vital work that the Canadian Diabetes Association does in helping fight this chronic disease, which affects so many of our people.”

The award is being presented in recognition of NunatuKavut’s outstanding contributions in helping to prevent and find a cure for diabetes.

In a recent letter to NCC about the award, Dawn Gallant, Regional Chair of the Canadian Diabetes Association, stated “On behalf of the Association, I wish to thank you for your commitment to helping people with diabetes live healthy lives…we thank you for being a true diabetes champion.”

NCC has supported this worthy cause for well over a decade and, for the last 11 years, has dedicated financial and human resources to support Guy Poole with “Liz’s Walk.” Guy organizes this annual event in memory of his wife, Elizabeth Poole, who lost her life to complications from diabetes.

“I have walked with Guy many times and, just this past March, joined him in his first winter walk from

Pinsent’s Arm to William’s Harbour,” said President Russell. “It was such a special day for me. He is a dear friend, an Elder and a truly remarkable human being. We thank him for his unwavering dedication to this cause.”

The award was officially announced during the Regional Volunteer Awards Presentation in St. John’s, NL last night and will be presented to NCC in the coming weeks.

NCC is committed to giving back to the people and the community and supports various community-based organizations. For further information on this and other donations the NCC has made, please visit Please also join in the conversation at and Twitter @nunatukavut.
