Ontario Regional Chief Glen Hare Offers Condolences Following Tragic House Fire in Sandy Lake First Nation

(Toronto, ON – January 18, 2022) Ontario Regional Chief Glen Hare issued the following statement offering condolences following the loss of several children after a tragic house fire in Sandy Lake First Nation:

“I am disheartened to hear of the loss of three young children in a tragic house fire in Sandy Lake First Nation,” said Ontario Regional Chief Glen Hare. “Our communities are heartbroken. On behalf of the Chiefs in Ontario, I am sending our condolences and prayers to Delaney and Cassandra Meekis and the surviving children, as well as the extended family and community during this time. We also acknowledge and thank our first responders and community members for their heroic efforts.”

“I have spoken to Chief Delores Kakegamic and have offered prayers, support and resources to the community and family during this time. Additionally, I will be reaching out to our partners for immediate solutions to address on-reserve fire prevention and protection; our communities, families and future generations cannot continue to endure these horrible tragedies and preventable deaths.”
