ONWA Honours International Inuit Day

Thunder Bay, ON – Today the Ontario Native Women’s Association (ONWA) honours International Inuit Day, celebrated each year on November 7th. This important day of recognition was established in 2006 by the Inuit Circumpolar Council (ICC), an international non-governmental organization representing Arctic peoples (the Inuit, the Yupik, and the Chukchi) living in Canada, Greenland, and parts of the United States and Russia (Alaska and the Chukchi Peninsula, respectively).

On this significant day, ONWA calls on all Canadians to join us in learning more about our Inuit brothers and sisters throughout the circumpolar world.

“Here at the Ontario Native Women’s Association, we proudly work toward supporting and amplifying the voice of all Indigenous women. Today as the world honours and recognizes International Inuit Day we are reminded of the strength of our Inuit sisters throughout the world. They continue to work tirelessly each day to protect their lands and exercise their inherent rights in a world rife with fractious change and exploitation.” stated Cora McGuire-Cyrette, Executive Director, ONWA.

“As a proud Inuk woman, honouring the timeless culture, resilience, accomplishments, and beauty of Inuit means so much to me, my family and community. Working at ONWA allows me to share the lens of Indigenous women in the work I do each day.” shared Roxanne Ruediger, Director of Corporate Services, ONWA.

To begin your journey of learning we recommend the excellent resources of Pauktuutit Inuit Women of Canada, Inuit Circumpolar Council Canada, and to visit the Tungasuvvingat Inuit website where additional sources of information and knowledge can be found.
