PE Government: Lieutenant Governor presents Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers

On behalf of Her Excellency the Right Honourable Julie Payette, Governor General of Canada, Her Honour the Honourable Antoinette Perry, Lieutenant Governor of Prince Edward Island, will present the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers, to a number of residents of Prince Edward Island. The ceremony will take place at Government House, Charlottetown, on Monday, April 30, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. and is by invitation only.
The Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers recognizes the exceptional volunteer achievements of Canadians from across the country in a wide range of fields. As an official Canadian honour, the Medal for Volunteers incorporates and replaces the Governor General’s Caring Canadian Award. The Medal builds on the legacy and spirit of the Caring Canadian Award by honouring the dedication and commitment of volunteers. Medals will be presented at this ceremony to:
Barbara Campbell – Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island
Barbara Campbell has volunteered with the Heart and Stroke Foundation for more than 10 years as a spokesperson and advocate for women’s heart health. A trained intensive care nurse, she recently accepted an invitation to advise the Foundation’s steering committee on women’s cardiovascular research.
Judith Clark – Lennox Island, Prince Edward Island
Former president of the Aboriginal Women’s Association of Prince Edward Island, Judy Clark is a renowned leader in her community and a strong advocate for ending violence against Indigenous women.
Simonne Cormier – Montague, Prince Edward Island
During her 18 years with the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program, Simonne Cormier has mentored new volunteers in addition to helping residents with their tax preparations. She also gives her time to those in need through the CIBC Run for the Cure and the Cancer Patient Advocate Program.
Darlene Jay – Mount Stewart, Prince Edward Island
For the past nine years, Darlene Jay has volunteered with the Heart and Stroke Foundation as a spokesperson for her community. A passionate advocate of heart health, she has participated in several local campaigns to encourage coordinated stroke care for Islanders, and has sold toques in support of the national Heart Month fundraiser.
Ann Kilby – Tyne Valley, Prince Edward Island
For the past 14 years, Ann Kilby has been a coach and mentor to Special Olympics athletes. Her renowned compassion and drive has helped to enhance the lives of many youths in her community.
Methilda Knockwood-Snache – Lennox Island, Prince Edward Island
A much-respected Elder, Methilda Knockwood-Snache maintains the culture and customes of the Mi’kmaq people of Lennox Island by sharing traditional wisdom and practices. The inspiring work she has done has left an indelible mark on her community.
Thirley Levi – Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island
Elder Thirley Levi is a well-respected leader in her community. She teaches younger generations about the customs, practices and importance of their culture, so that they can leave a legacy for future generations.
Judy K. MacDonald – South Rustico, Prince Edward Island
Judy MacDonald is one of the founding members of the Community Museums Association of Prince Edward Island. Her expertise as treasurer guaranteed the initial success of the museum and, since 1983, she has remained an influential member, offering workshops and training to new volunteers.
Wally MacDonald – Stratford, Prince Edward Island
Wally MacDonald has been a part of P.E.I.’s Community Volunteer Income Tax Program for 12 years, devoting much of his time to helping individuals with disabilities gain access to their benefits. He has also volunteered with the Royal Canadian Legion and the local Meals on Wheels service.
Alma MacDougall – Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island
A registered nurse, Alma MacDougall is also a Mi’kmaq Confederacy cultural support provider. Her passion for Indigenous health issues has led her to work at local and national levels to improve the lives of Indigenous people in her province.
Gilles Painchaud, C.D. – Wellington, Prince Edward Island
For 45 years, Gilles Painchaud has volunteered with the Royal Canadian Legion and has been a leader dedicated to making his community a better place to live.
Allan Parks – Miscouche, Prince Edward Island
Allan Parks’ volunteer efforts have benefitted the Royal Canadian Legion and several causes committed to helping veterans. He has also contributed to his community through his involvement in the Scouting movement, the school board, seniors’ housing and the Last Post Fund.
Clifford Poirier – Summerside, Prince Edward Island
As the lead volunteer in western P.E.I., Cliff Poirier has been working with Community Volunteer Income Tax Program for 18 years, helping individuals during the off-season to ensure they receive their benefits. He has been actively involved in his community all of his life, having taken on roles with organizations that span the domains of theatre, sports, health care and the church.
Valerie Robinson – Winsloe, Prince Edward Island
For the past 50 years, Valerie Robinson has selflessly given of her time to causes related to health, education and sports, notably the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Auxiliary, the Rotary Club, Flowers of Hope, the Canadian Liver Foundation and the Sherwood Parkdale Minor Hockey Association.
Tim Sock – Lennox Island, Prince Edward Island
Tim Sock has had a significant impact on those who reside in his community. Actively hosting support groups at a local wellness centre, he has helped to positively transform the lives of those who attend his sessions.
Fred Stilwell – Cornwall, Prince Edward Island (Posthumous – accepted by Mrs. Joan Stilwell)
Fred Stilwell has been a loyal volunteer with the Community Income Tax Program for 33 years and has provided exemplary service to many Island communities, notably at long-term care facilities where many residents face mobility challenges. He has also been an elder at the Hunter River United Church and actively volunteered with the Town of Cornwall’s Citizens on Patrol.
Marlene Thomas – Lennox Island, Prince Edward Island
Elder Marlene Thomas is a prominent community builder. Vice-president of the Aboriginal Women’s Association of PEI, she also coordinates Walking the Red Road, a wellness program run by the Native Council of PEI, and has offered counselling services to those impacted by addiction.
Eileen White – Souris, Prince Edward Island
Eileen White has been with the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program for 15 years, currently acting as a lead volunteer in Kings County. In addition to mentoring a number of new volunteers over the years, she also tutors individuals with intellectual disabilities and has served on the board of directors of the McIntyre Group Home.
