The Louis Riel Day celebrations in Portage la Prairie kicked off with a special moment yesterday in Portage la Prairie as the Métis flag was raised at City Hall, symbolizing pride for the local Métis community. The flag-raising, marks the beginning of the celebrations leading up to Louis Riel Day on Monday, February 17.
“It’s an emotional moment,” said Kim Chipman, a member of the Manitoba Métis Federation (MMF) chapter here in Portage la Prairie, reflecting on the pride she feels seeing the flag raised.
“To see it up there for the whole week as we lead up to our Louis Riel Day celebration is wonderful. So much pride in what Mayor Sharilyn Knox has done for us.”
