“The level of funding will not define the identity of the University of Saskatchewan,” President Peter Stoicheff said during a recent editorial board with The StarPhoenix.
This is an intelligent approach for an institution charged with an educational mission that transcends the bottom line. Without good leadership and a strong sense of purpose, all the money in the world can’t create success.
No matter what the provincial government does with funding today, Saskatchewan’s post-secondary institutions will forge ahead in educating and enlightening students and the communities they serve. This is their duty.
It is the government’s duty, however, to make sure precious tax dollars flow into the most deserving and important places. Despite the province’s current tight fiscal situation, it must take the long view and not short-change causes that can help make Saskatchewan competitive for years to come.
