Premier R.J. Simpson responds to the swearing-in of Prime Minister Carney’s Cabinet
May 13, 2025
Northwest Territories Premier R.J. Simpson issued the following statement today in response to the swearing-in of Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Cabinet:
“I want to congratulate Prime Minister Carney on the swearing-in of his Cabinet. With Northern roots and a global perspective, the Prime Minister’s leadership appears to reflect both the urgency and the opportunity of this moment. The appointment of a dedicated Minister of Northern and Arctic Affairs, alongside strong representation across key portfolios, signals a renewed federal focus on the North and a recognition of the region’s central role in Canada’s future.
“I also want to extend my sincere congratulations to Rebecca Alty on her appointment as Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations. A long-time Northerner and former Mayor of Yellowknife, Minister Alty brings valuable experience and a deep understanding of the Northwest Territories. I look forward to working with her to advance land claims and self-government agreements—essential foundations for reconciliation, economic growth, and long-term stability.
“This is a pivotal time for the Northwest Territories. The North has a leading role to play in building a stronger, more resilient Canada: through Arctic sovereignty, sustainable development, Indigenous partnership, and nation-building infrastructure. But success will require genuine collaboration and timely action.
“The Government of the Northwest Territories is committed to working with the Prime Minister, Minister Alty, Indigenous governments, and all federal partners to deliver meaningful results for Northerners and for the country as a whole. That work begins now.”
