Issue aggravated by underfunding of child welfare services on First Nations, says Angus

As Patricia Ballantyne was leading her Walk of Sorrow through Cochrane and Timmins this weekend, a separate march was being held in Ottawa.

Both related to the horrific legacy left by the residential school system.

An estimated 800 people gathered on Parliament Hill on Saturday before marching through downtown Ottawa and calling for an independent investigation into Canada’s residential schools.

The protest was organized by NDP MPs Charlie Angus, who represents Timmins-James Bay, and Mumilaaq Qaqqaq, who represents Nunavut.
