Honorary Title Recognizes Exceptional Merit in Law Profession: Goertzen
The Manitoba government has appointed 11 Manitoba lawyers as Queen’s counsel to recognize their extraordinary contributions to the practise of law, Justice Minister Kelvin Goertzen announced today.
“The lawyers we are honouring today showcase the very best of their profession,” said Goertzen. “These individuals have exhibited a steadfast commitment to excellence in the practise of law while exuding professionalism, integrity and leadership. I extend my sincere congratulations to 2021’s appointees.”
Those receiving the Queen’s counsel (QC) designation include:
- Valerie Perry, QC;
- Bruce H. King, QC;
- Jonathan Kroft, QC;
- Tracey Lynn Epp, QC;
- Michael E. Guttormson, QC;
- Richard D. Buchwald, QC;
- Keith D. LaBossiere, QC;
- Bradley D. Regehr, QC;
- Gregory Gordon Evans, QC;
- Leilani Kagan, QC; and
- Brenlee Carrington Trepel, QC.
Queen’s counsel is an honorary title given to a lawyer by the lieutenant-governor in council, based on recommendations made by the minister of justice following consultation with an advisory council.
“Appointments require lawyers to hold a practising certificate for at least 10 years and demonstrate outstanding practice. The individuals selected act with integrity, have the respect of their peers and contribute to the development of excellence in their profession,” added Goertzen.
The advisory committee is chaired by Chief Justice Richard Chartier of the Manitoba Court of Appeal and includes representatives from the Law Society of Manitoba, the Manitoba Bar Association and public representatives.
After stopping these appointments in 2001, the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba passed the Queen’s Counsel Act in 2018 and restored Queen’s counsel appointments for Manitoba lawyers.
Nominations for 2022 are now being accepted. Individuals may nominate themselves or nominate another eligible person for a Queen’s counsel appointment. For more information or to submit a nomination to Queen’s counsel, visit https://gov.mb.ca/justice/crown/queencounsel/index.html.
