Province Seems to Agree with Reconciliation, But Tight-Lipped Due to court case – VOCM

The province appears to agree that Aboriginal survivors of residential schools in Newfoundland and Labrador are due an apology, but are saying little as its recently been named a co-defendant in an ongoing class action.

This province was excluded from the 2008 federal government apology and compensation package. One of the 94 recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Report demands they be included.

In the Legislature yesterday, Opposition parties called on government to commit to enacting the 28 recommendations of the report that fall to provincial jurisdictions.

Premier Paul Davis says he has to be careful not to prejudice the court process. Davis says government is in a unique position. He believes in the fair treatment of all people.

Davis says he wants to have a better look at all of the recommendations directed at provinces before committing to enact them all.
