Responsible Investments to Strengthen Communities

Three Labrador communities, Hopedale, L’Anse au Loup and West St. Modeste, will receive funding from the Provincial Government to assist with municipal infrastructure upgrades. The $1.1 million cost-shared investment is in addition to over $11.5 million provided to Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Labrador City and Wabush through the 2014-17 multi-year capital works program.

“The Provincial Government is committed to investing in priority infrastructure projects throughout our province. Sound infrastructure investments and the delivery of improved municipal services support the long-term sustainability, growth and development of communities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.”
– The Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador

The Municipal Capital Works program fosters the development of cost-shared projects in a wide range of municipal infrastructure areas. Typical projects include water and wastewater treatment, roads, recreational facilities and various community initiatives.

“Investing in infrastructure is essential to the overall viability of our province’s communities and through the 2015 municipal capital works program we have put a focus on investing in drinking water related projects. Communities with quality municipal services are an important component in increasing the province’s population and align with our Population Growth Strategy.”
– The Honourable Keith Hutchings, Minister of Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs

In addition to the capital works projects announced today, in March, the Department of Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs funded two advanced drinking water units at a cost of $750,000 for the communities of Cartwright and Charlottetown, Labrador. Advanced drinking water units are an innovative way for rural areas of the province to access clean and safe drinking water.

“I am very pleased to see our government continue to make it a priority to invest in the communities of Labrador and help them improve their water and sewer operations for their residents. The communities of Hopedale, L’Anse au Loup and West St. Modeste, already do their best to provide the necessary services to their beautiful communities and I am glad that government has been able to partner with them to upgrade their infrastructure. I look forward to our government making more of these beneficial partnerships with Labrador communities in the future.”
– The Honourable Keith Russell, Minister of Labrador and Aboriginal Affairs

The 2015 municipal capital works program investment builds on the new community sustainability partnership announced through Budget 2015, which provided an additional $46 million over the next three years to communities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. These additional revenues to municipalities can be utilized to assist with financing municipal capital works projects.
