Provincial Government Recognizes National Aboriginal Day

Celebrating Aboriginal Culture
Today, the Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador and Minister of Labrador and Aboriginal Affairs, participated in the opening ceremonies of the St. John’s Native Friendship Centre National Aboriginal Day events at Pippy Park.
“National Aboriginal Day provides all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians the opportunity to celebrate the contributions and vibrant cultures of the province’s Aboriginal people. It was an honour to attend the opening ceremonies this morning at Pippy Park and observe traditional songs, art and dance.”

As Minister of Labrador and Aboriginal Affairs, Premier Ball is working in partnership with Aboriginal governments and organizations as well as the Federal Government to progress numerous Aboriginal files such as:
- Implementing the calls to action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission report;
- Committing that the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador will participate in the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls; and
- Supporting efforts to repatriate the remains of Demasduit and Nonosbawsut from the National Museum of Scotland.

Today marks the 20th Anniversary of National Aboriginal Day. National Aboriginal Day is an occasion to celebrate the rich contributions and vibrant culture of Aboriginal peoples in Canada.
