Rama chief, whose family members were placed in residential schools, reacts to commission’s recommendations

Rodney Noganosh’s cousins were taken. His aunts and uncles were taken. His stepfather was taken.

The Rama First Nation chief’s family was broken up, and it wasn’t the only one.

The fact there wasn’t a residential school near the local reserve doesn’t mean the community wasn’t impacted. He said it just meant the children had even farther to go when they tried to flee to come home.

“It was a horrible situation here and I think that needs to be told,” Noganosh said.

After five years of hearing stories from aboriginals haunted by the government-sanctioned, church-run residential school system that operated between 1892 and 1996, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) released last week 94 recommendations in advance of a full report coming later this year.
