Iqaluit, NU (January 9, 2013) – The Honourable Daniel Shewchuk, Minister of Justice, today announced that the Rankin Inlet Healing Facility is now operational.

“I am pleased that the Rankin Inlet Healing Facility is now completed and has opened its doors to its first inmates today,” said Minister Shewchuk. “Having this facility operational is the first step towards our goal of housing all Nunavut offenders within the territory.”

The Rankin Inlet Healing Facility is a 48-bed medium security facility – the first of its kind in the Kivalliq region – and brings employment opportunities to people in the region. The facility will be deeply involved in the community as inmates will participate in community-based programs as part of their rehabilitation plans.

The official opening of the facility is scheduled for January 25, 2013.

The Government of Nunavut’s Department of Justice’s goal is to promote and protect a peaceful society through the administration of a justice system which respects the role of community members in maintaining harmony, and which adheres to the Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit principles and Inuit traditional knowledge.
