Reconciliation Regina hosts Truth and Reconciliation Economic Conference
January 23, 2020
Working alongside the City of Regina, File Hills Qu’Appelle Tribal Council (FHQTC), Cowessess First Nation and the Regina & District Chamber of Commerce, Reconciliation Regina Inc. will host a conference in March that will seek to connect the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s (TRC) Calls to Action to economic development.
TRC Call to Action #92 calls for Canada’s corporate sector to implement a reconciliation framework and to apply its principles, norms and standards to corporate policy and core operational activities involving Indigenous peoples and their lands and resources. This economic development conference will bring together a broad spectrum of Saskatchewan-based individuals, corporations, and academics to explore truth and reconciliation in the economic sphere.
“As the City of Regina is a community leader in economic development, this is a Call to Action on which we are committed to making progress,” said Mayor Michael Fougere. “This is an opportunity to share and replicate innovative ideas and past successes and form new relationships to help us move economic reconciliation forward.”
Chief Cadmus Delorme, Cowessess First Nation added, “the Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action is a map to ensure our community gets stronger one day at a time. Reconciliation happens when there is no gap in the corporate sector frameworks, standards, policies and activities involving Indigenous people. This conference will provide examples of how to reduce the gap.”
The two-day conference will discuss how to develop stronger and more diverse workforces, bridging the economic reconciliation gap, and more effectively engaging Indigenous communities. It will also include the Regina debut of filmmaker Andree Cazabon’s short film Economic Reconciliation.
“Economic Reconciliation is vital to all of our communities. We need to work toward a future that is inclusive of Indigenous peoples in all facets, including the economy. We need to embrace a reality that will see ever increasing numbers of Indigenous people as employers and employees. The economic conference will help us move in the right direction,” stated John Hopkins, Chief Executive Officer, Regina & District Chamber of Commerce.
The Connection to Reconciliation Conference will take place March 19 and 20th, 2020 in Regina. For more details, visit www.regina.ca/TRC.
