Regulation of B.C.’s Indigenous utilities focus of hearing Wednesday – Kelowna Daily Courier

The BC Utilities Commission is holding a hearing in Kelowna Wednesday on the regulation of Indigenous utilities.

It’s the second in a series of 10 hearings being held across B.C.

The hearings, or community input sessions as the commission calls them, are intended to define what Indigenous utilities do exactly, who owns and operates them, who they serve and whether they should be regulated.

The first hearing was held Monday in Cranbrook. The panel says it heard about a large solar project planned for the area; the importance of economic development; the desire to establish strategic partnerships with existing energy providers; the need to build greater capacity; and some of the impediments facing Indigenous energy projects.
