HALIFAX, N.S., April 11, 2016 — Canadian Heritage announced the release of the Government of Canada Survey of Heritage Institutions (GCSHI) 2015 report and will lead a session in Halifax, on Thursday, April 14 at the Canadian Museums Association (CMA) National Conference to share highlights from the survey results, update Conference attendees on newly captured information, and discuss challenges and improvements made from the previous Survey.

The Survey aims to present a comprehensive portrait of Canada’s heritage sector, including museums, art galleries, historical sites and other heritage institutions, and track its fluctuations through the years. Highlights from the 2015 Survey include:

  • An incredible 61.8 million visitors to heritage institutions;
  • 32,000 employees working in the heritage sector throughout Canada; and,
  • Over $2.12 billion in revenue generated by heritage institutions.

“We are very pleased about the release of this important report and excited to discover the national trends and statistics for the heritage sector,” says John G. McAvity, the CMA’s executive director and CEO. “CMA members participated in the Survey last spring by providing crucial information about their institutions. We support this study and will participate in future editions for greater success.”

Based on 2013 data, the Survey is the second iteration conducted by the Department of Canadian Heritage. It collected financial and operating data on not-for-profit heritage institutions, including museums, art galleries, archives, historic sites, zoos and botanical gardens .

We invite you to take a moment to discover some of the survey’s results. The GCSHI report can be found on the Department of Canadian Heritage website under publications:
