Report identifying health inequities in New Brunswick released

FREDERICTON (GNB) – A report identifying health inequities in New Brunswick was released today by the Office of the Chief Medical Officer of Health.

“New Brunswick, as with the rest of Canada, has a significant challenge with respect to health inequities,” said Dr. Cristin Muecke, acting deputy chief medical officer of health. “This report documents some of these inequities in New Brunswick so that we can better understand them and address the gaps.”

The report indicates, for example, that low-income New Brunswickers have poorer health and experience more food insecurity than those earning higher incomes.

“Health inequities exist in our province,” said Muecke. “They are consistent and unfair differences in health status, where socially disadvantaged groups face poorer health than those ranked higher on the social scale. Everybody benefits from reduced health inequities, not just the socially disadvantaged groups.”
