The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB) and the Wood Buffalo Regional Library (WBRL) are partnering to create the It’s Time to Read book club, featuring the works and voices of Indigenous authors.

As part of ongoing efforts to advance Reconciliation, this virtual book club is intended to increase understanding and awareness of Indigenous culture, history, and current issues.

“Learning is a critical step,” said RMWB Indigenous and Rural Relations Director Dennis Fraser. “Through Indigenous authors—by exploring their voices and worldviews, and by talking through the themes in their writings, we can all find important lessons and points of reflection.”

“Wood Buffalo Regional Library is thrilled to collaborate with the RMWB on the It’s Time to Read book club,” said Sheri Anthony, WBRL Community Engagement Manager. “Books, both fiction and nonfiction, are a powerful tool for education and reconciliation. Through this book club, we hope our community expands their awareness of Indigenous experiences, engages with Indigenous history and way of life, and gains a deeper understanding of the effects of colonization and the importance of reconciliation. We look forward to the conversations in January and throughout 2022.”

Through a virtual platform, book club members will regularly explore and discuss books and share thoughts through discussion, polls, and other methods. All are welcome to join; however, it is important to note that books may contain adult content, including but not limited to adult language and themes, and violence.

In January, the club will explore its first book: Firekeeper’s Daughter by Angeline Boulley. The first 20 subscribers will receive a free copy. Please note, this giveaway is only open to Wood Buffalo residents.
